The Impact of Digital Photography on Journalism(NFSW)
Photography has developed vastly through the years and digital photography has made it more available to the general public. Photographs were keep hold on memories and in this digital age, we use a way of communication. Not only has photography has developed but every other technology has as well. Digital photography is easy to integrate to other technologies, such as camera phones. This has made photography a `human need` in some sort of manner. Digitizing photography has made easier for people represent themselves. They control what want to see and digital photography with the development of technology has helped doing so. Photo manipulation has existed before any computer software was able to do so with ease. Photographers were able to alter the image during the developing process and this method is more stressful than what it is possible to do with programs like Photoshop and more.
Photo manipulation is such a big issue and has spread on to photojournalism. As viewers, we expect fair and accurate reporting from photo journalists. The evolution of photography into digitization makes viewers wonder if everything they are told is the truth. Achieving the ultimate perfection and letting what the photo journalist believe what the general public want to know, questions the fact if digital photography is helping photojournalism. Photo journalism was meant to help the general public be aware of whatever is around them. Photojournalists have a passion to report for the public and help spread word about whatever they are covering but can that passion be also what could drive them to put bias in the work? Alerting the photo to their own linking and presenting to the public violates the NPPA code of ethics. The code of ethics states that photojournalists play a valuable role in the process of journalism and provide fair and accurate news will subject the photojournalist’s integrity. Viewers are ready to believe anything that they see from trained professional and the code of ethics helps the viewers from being alienated and misled.
It can be said digital photo manipulation has made an impact on photography and question on how see everything. But, there is a part of digital photography that has helped journalism. Compared to analog photography, photojournalists are able to share their work with the rest of the world with the help of the internet. It is a definitely an easier process than analog photography. Soon as you take a photo with a DSLR, you are ready to share with other. But with a regular SLR, you have to go through the painstaking process of developing and waiting, and then you can share. The analog method is time consuming, and digital photography helps it easier to work for the photojournalism and less stressful. If you take into the consideration of how the inmates were treated in Abu Garib prison, you will understand digital photography of helped us know this atrocity. The American officials took advantage of their power with having no ethics and treated the prisoners if they weren’t humans with any rights. What is worse is that military officials personally took pictures of others committing such heinous embarrassment towards the prisoners and showed it to other likes if these prisoners did deserve the embarrassment. The ease of accessibility with digital photography helped put an stop this atrocity and thought an lesson that use the power at ease but also helped show that whatever can happen in the overseas, we are able to know about with digital photography.
